Three words are currently present in my BRIGHT art practice: curiosity, clarity and warmth. They are forging an interesting new direction in my work and outlook. These words encompass feelings of ambition, value and emotion and are vital to developing a proactive and sustainable practice.
The words have arrived through the continuing development of a body of limited palette work stemming from a focused still-life study. I want to understand and interweave colour harmony with pattern and design to create dynamic, playful compositions.
artists’s statement
Curiosity
As I look from my kitchen windowsill to the garden beyond, there is a host of ever-changing inspirations. Pot plants provide a wealth of form and structural delight in their detailed botanical complexities, while the outside elements affect colour and mood daily. The joys of observing and recording my immediate environment provide abundant visual material to work from. My Pots & Plates, Kalanchoes and Bottle & Branch collections are a testament to that.
Clarity
A curious benefit of such a close-to-home muse is that my practice feels spacious. My garden studio gives me generous scope to focus, peace of mind to plan and the clarity of thought I’ve yearned for. Being able to cast my eye beyond the garden wall and see across distant fields offers a delightful reminder to dream big dreams.
Warmth
The notion that my creativity can envelop the many aspects of my life, artist, wife, mother, daughter, and friend, is a state of being I strive for. The Garage studio is a big part of my family life, so my paintings have also become part of that life. The work revolves around the push and pull of the small wonders of the day-to-day, and I absolutely love it. It warms my spirit while the colours entice me to go on.
